Say Nothing was written by Radden Keefe. The story is about Jean McConville, who was abducted by masked intruders from her Belfast home. She was a mother of ten children. During the abduction, her children clung to her legs. The kidnapping was cruel because the criminals pulled her out in the presence of her children. Jean was dragged to a waiting van. She instructed her firstborn son to take care of other children until she comes back. Unfortunately, her children did not see her again. Some of the people who abducted Jean are well-known to her children. The children recognized them as their neighbors.
Every person knew that the Irish Republic Army (IRA) was behind the abduction. However, no one dared to speak out due to fear. The children stayed for over thirty years, wondering what happened to their mother. Consequently, her remains were uncovered on a shoreline. Here, the children came to the bitter reality because they immediately realized her mother was killed. The blue safety pin that was fixed to her clothes made the children understand that it was their mother.
Jean, like many other people from Ireland, were subjected to torture and ultimate death by IRA. The atrocities were committed by the government. IRA was fighting British soldiers to get them out of their country. Jean was suspected to be an informer of British soldiers. That annoyed her neighbors and IRA. The man behind Jean’s death was Gerry Adams. Adams ordered Jean to be captured. He was implicated by his close aides, Hughes and Price. Despite the evidence, Adams was questioned and released.
