Savage Sam is a children's story written by Fred Gipson, published in 1962. It follows on from Gipson's story Old Yeller, accompanying the Coates family on another adventure.
The book is set during the 1800s, on a ranch in Texas owned by the Coates family. Gipson has stated that the book was inspired by the life of Herman Lehmann, who was captured as a child by an Apache tribe. Lehmann became very well-known during his lifetime, as his story fascinated many people.
Following Old Keller's son Savage Sam, the book explores the loyalty and companionship of dogs. The plot follows Travis and his younger brother Arliss as they are captured by an Apache tribe, and eventually make their escape.
