When Esch answers the government evacuation phone call and the impending hurricane starts to feel real for her, she reflects on the worst hurricane she was a part of, at nine years old. Her mother was pregnant with Junior, her "happy accident." The night of the storm, Randall and Mr. Batiste slept soundly while Skeet, Esch, and her mother gathered together.
