The author uses the golden city as a symbol of hope. Caius is a hopeless man, struggling to realize that he has lost his entire family. When he gets an opportunity to visit the golden city to do his craft work in one of the largest cathedrals, he sees hope of starting life again. Caius thinks that traveling far from his hometown can give him an opportunity to meet new people and a new environment that can help him heal. Therefore, the golden city is an important symbol in the text because it signifies optimism for Caius.

Why did the Queen of Batiara and Antae kidnap Caius Crispin?
Caius received an invitation from Emperor Valerius II to go to the city to decorate and restore the Great Sanctuary. Caius is one of the greatest artisans, and he gets that opportunity after his partner recommends him. However, the Queen of Batiara and Antens discovers that Caius is heading to meet the emperor. She quickly kidnaps Caius to give him dangerous information he must deliver to the emperor. The Queen is making an offer of marriage to the king, and there is no other better way to deliver the message apart from forcing Caius to be the messenger. The young Queen uses this political tactic to save her life and territory. Crispin knows that is a very dangerous assignment because the Emperor is already married, but he does not have the option to accept the task.
