Sailing to Sarantium

Sailing to Sarantium Analysis

Archetypal of Kay, the setting is based on a real historical period, in this case, the 6th century Eastern Roman Empire. The Western Roman Empire had fallen a century before and was replaced by the Ostrogothic kingdom. Consequently, the Byzantine Empire under the rule of Justinian the Great fought with the consecutive kingdom. Moreover, the story is based on W. B. Yeats's “Sailing to Byzantium” which tells the tale of a man seeking immortality through his metaphorical journey. As such, the narrative focuses on the grieving protagonist pursuing immortality and legacy through his artistic prowess.

The story takes place in the Sarantine Empire during the scramble for the throne after the emperor's death. Petrus of Trakesia engages in political warfare to secure the title for his uncle and later for himself as Valerius II. Subsequently, he instructs the decoration and renovation of the Great Sanctuary summoning skilled mosaicists and artists. The story introduces the reader to Crispin who has been invited to the Sarantium but is also grieving the death of his wife. Crippled with guilt over the loss of his family, Crispin has several encounters during his journey that changes his perspective. Furthermore, he is caught between the politics of the kingdoms when he is tasked with delivering a message to the emperor. Meanwhile, he encounters a slave girl about to be killed and tries to save her with the help of his assistant Vargos. Their interactions with unknown enemies lead to near-death experiences that let him have a new outlook on life.

Initially lacking the purpose for continuing living, Crispin confronts his fears, guilty, and faith in the journey. The novel is about the path of overcoming personal loss and seeking purpose through rebuilding and creating. Crispin finally understands the significance of fortifying his legacy through art that defines life in all its magnificence.
