Roller Girl Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Roller Derby

The roller derby is a motif that shows Astrid's self-discovery. When Astrid attends the roller derby for the first time during summer, she develops an interest in becoming a tough girl. After enrolling in skating classes, Astrid discovers it is not easy becoming a successful skater. Skating helps Astrid mature and understand that she needs to compromise and forgive for her to move on. For instance, when Astrid's friend, Nicole, decides to break their friendship, Astrid accepts and moves on. While attending skating lessons, Astrid starts a new friendship with Zoey, a fellow successful skater. At first, Astrid is jealous of Zoey’s success, but she learns to appreciate other people's success.

The Library

The library is a symbol of Astrid's personal reflection. After Astrid breaks up with Nicole, she accompanies her mother to the library because it is the best place she can reflect on her past mistakes and forge a way forward to become a better person. Through personal reflection, Astrid learns the value of forgiveness and accepting the choices of others. For instance, Nicole refuses to register for skating classes and instead enrolls in dancing classes. Astrid feels angry because Nicole makes a contrary choice. However, she accepts reality after reflecting on her life and realizing that every person makes different choices in life.

Rainbow Bite

Rainbow Bite is a symbol of motivation. The first time Astrid goes skating, she gets encouraged to become a strong girl like Rainbow Bite. Rainbow Bite is the current skating champion. Astrid does not stop at anything because she practices daily. In the end, Astrid's practice yields positive results, and she becomes an expert in skating. In addition, Astrid gets an opportunity to interact with Rainbow Bite, who reminds her that she is a hero.
