The irony of summer for Astrid
At the novel's beginning, Astrid is optimistic that she will have a wonderful summer with her friend Nicole, attending the roller derby classes together. Astrid and Nicole are close friends. Astrid does not believe that Nicole can refuse to join her. Ironically, Nicole changes her mind and instead enrolls in dancing classes. The summer for Asteroid unfolds in a way she never expected. Astrid looked forward to happily training in the roller Derby alongside her friend, Nicole, but that did not happen.
Verbal irony
There is a verbal irony when Astrid tells her mother that she attends the derby classes with Nicole. Ironically, Astrid knows she is lying, but she makes her mother believe everything she says. Astrid also tells her mother that Nicole's mother will be bringing her home every day after attending the roller derby sessions. On the contrary, Astrid plans to walk home daily to keep her mother in the dark about the reality.
The irony betrayal
Ironically, when Nicole chooses to attend dancing classes, she starts a friendship with Rachel, an enemy of Astrid. Rachel is a bully who mistreats Astrid. Despite Nicole knowing the kind of person Rachel is, she decides to betray Astrid by starting to associate with her. Rachel and Nicole start talking ill of Astrid, and Nicole is comfortable with the insults Rachel hurls towards Astrid. The reader finds it paradoxical that a very close friend can decide to betray and hurt you intentionally.
