Objective:

Students will be able to relate concrete objects and events to larger thematic concepts.

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.2

Structure:

Have students keep a t-chart as they read at home, in class, or as you have in-class discussions. On this chart should be objects and events on the left and then ideas of themes that these things might signify on the right.

This activity can be done independently as an active reading activity and in class collaboratively by making a t-chart that everyone can see and asking students to contribute and share what they find with each other.
