Red Rising Imagery

Red Rising Imagery

Love and war

One quote in the text reads "Love and war are two different battlefields." Here, Brown uses the imagery of a battlefield to show the struggle and suffering that comes along with both love and war. However, by saying they are different battlefields, Brown emphasizes the contrast between love and war.

Chains

The imagery of "chains" is often used to describe the control that the Golds have over the Reds. For example, the Reaping Song includes the lyrics "remember the chains when gold ruled with iron reins." In addition to this, we often hear the idea of "breaking the chains."

The Reaping Song

Imagery is used in the reaping song, emphasizing the struggle of the Red people. For example, Brown uses imagery to describe Autumn in the following lyrics: "remember the burn, when leaves with fire and seasons turned." In the next stanza of the song, Brown uses imagery to describe the winter: "Remember the chill, when rains froze and snows did kill." The passing of seasons in this song ultimately reflects the fact that the Red people have struggled for a long time.
