The first book in what later became a trilogy of the same name, Red Rising (which was originally published in 2014), tells the incredibly compelling story of a lowborn miner called Darrow, who has grown up on Mars (in the future) yearning for a better life. There are castes on this future Mars based on color. Darrow and his family are, for example, members of the lowest possible class . They are members of the red class, who must endlessly mine Helium-3 so that the planet can be terraformed to fit the needs of humans. To that end, Darrow embarks on a quest to infiltrate the caste of elite Golds so that he can destroy this deeply unfair and evil system from within.
Quickly after the release of the book (which Kirkus Reviews called "a fine novel" that is "reminiscent of The Hunger Games and Game of Thrones"), Universal Pictures bought the book's film rights in a reported seven-figure deal. However, after a few years of inaction, the rights reverted back to Brown, who is currently working a T.V. series based on the book - and likely based on the two subsequent books in the series. Brown also re-sold the film rights to novel, so it is fair to say that there will be an adaption of Red Rising on the screen sometime soon.
