Description of Sylvestre

The narrator describes Sylvestre who is his butler as, ‘A slight sound at the door. And in comes Sylvestre in his striped jacket, carrying aloft the silver tray-thick, beautiful silver from my mines…’ The narrator’s description of Sylvestre and the tray contains visual imagery. The imagery has been built by the use of adjectives such as silver to describe the material of the tray, thick to describe its size and striped to describe Sylvestre’s jacket.

The description of the room that the narrator was in

The narrator describes the room as, ‘The three brocade carpets have been pulled back, one after the other, showing a fine sunny day for the races, and Rudes’ sculptures. The boy-hero with his little balls exposed to view being carried off to war by a tough disheveled chieftain…’ The description of the room’s carpets and paintings contain visual imagery. The imagery has been built by the use of adjectives such as brocade to describe the carpets, sunny to describe the weather and disheveled to describe the manner in which the chieftain looked.

The nun

The narrator describes the nun that he had sexual relations with as, ‘I fucked a nun of Saint Vincent de Paul, dressed in indigo blue, with a starched, winged headdress, a scapular between her tits, and a whip made of Russian leather at her belt…’ This description contains visual imagery as the reader can visualize the dress of the nun. The imagery has been built by adjectives such as indigo blue that describe the clothing of the nun.

The Little Chimney Sweep Painting

The narrator describes the painting as, ‘…next to it is The Little Chimney Sweep by Chocarne-Moreau and Berauds fashionable reception where the red background marvelously sets off the pale-low necked dresses of the women amongst black tail-coats, green palms and glittering glass.’ The imagery in the narration is the description of the women in the red background. Their dresses are described using adjectives such as black, green and glittering.
