The Head of state
The main character of the book is the head of state of an unnamed Caribbean country. He is portrayed as extravagant for he lived in luxury in France, inhumane because he committed war crimes in his country and loving towards his family and children.
Ofelia
Ofelia is the daughter of the head of state. She lives with him in France. The citizens of the Caribbean country view Ofelia as a spoiled child for she lives in luxury. Her charity works are also considered ironical for she gave to other countries yet she did not give to her country where women were not able to access hospitals when they were due to give birth.
Ariel
Ariel is the son of the head of state. He is portrayed as a born diplomat who is supportive of his father. Ariel accompanies his father to war in their home country.
General Peralta
Peralta is a distinguished academician. He is very knowledgeable in the art of war and the running of a country. The general acts as counsel and confidant to the head of state.
Galvan
Galvan was a close friend of the head of state but he (Galvan) betrayed the head of state. Galvan led a rebellion in the home country of the head of state and was executed and his body thrown into the sea on the orders of the president.
