Ruby Oliver
Ruby is the main character in the novel, and she is madly in love with Noel. The teen romance between Ruby and Noel is affectionate and real. According to Ruby, Noel is a true boyfriend because he is always there for her. For instance, Noel picks up her calls on time, and he is always supportive.
Things take a drastic change days after Noel relocates to New York City. Initially, Noel picks up Ruby's calls, and he regularly sends her love poems. However, when Noel goes silent and refuses to pick up Ruby's calls, things start to change. Ruby is confused, and she thinks that Noel has another girlfriend. Therefore, Ruby starts seeing Van Deusen, and they start a romantic relationship. Nevertheless, Ruby discovers that Van Deusen is not as romantic as Noel. Therefore, despite having a new boyfriend, she cannot stop thinking about him.
Noel
Noel is Ruby's boyfriend; he is passionate about their relationship and looks forward to marrying her in the future. When Noel gets an opportunity to relocate to New York, he keeps close to Ruby through regular phone calls and love letters. Unfortunately, a sad incident happens, he witnesses a boy getting involved in a bike accident, and he can do nothing to help. The incident leaves Noel confused, and he switches off his communication channels. Unfortunately, Ruby thinks that Noel is intentionally ignoring her.
Dr. Z
Dr. Z is a psychiatrist, and her primary role is to help Ruby get mature and confident. At the beginning of the story, the reader realizes that Ruby is neurotic and self-absorbed. Therefore, her parents decide to employ a psychiatrist to help her stabilize.
Gideon Van Deusen
After realizing Noel is no longer taking her calls, Gideon becomes Ruby's new boyfriend. Initially, Ruby is careful not to cheat on Noel, but with time, the temptation becomes irresistible. Ruby starts to have intimate discussions with Gideon, and in no time, they start kissing and sleeping together. However, Ruby admits that Gideon is not as romantic as Noel, but she appreciates his support and availability.
