How do Catherine and Robert in the flashback in Scene 1 differ from their portrayals in the rest of the play?
Catherine and Robert both seem to be in much better mental health in this flashback scene. Robert appears much healthier here than the way Catherine says he was at the end of his life (more lucid, supportive, etc). Catherine is also very different. She seems happier, full of hope for the future, more productive, and more social than in other parts of the play. She handles Robert’s idiosyncrasies with maturity.
