Princess & The Hustler Irony

Princess & The Hustler Irony

The name "Princess"

Despite being nicknamed "Princess," Phyllis James is often overlooked, underestimated, and undervalued. She is not treated with the same level of respect that princesses are typically used to.

Public transportation

There is a profound irony in the fact that the buses and other public transportation, which are designed to serve all citizens, become a symbol of racial discrimination that denies service to people because of their racial identities.

Princess' mother

Princess' mother claims to fully support her daughter on a couple of occasions but is rarely there for her when she needs it—especially for her pageant preparation—because she works all the time.

Princess' hair

The pageant that Princess decides to participate in is meant to appreciate and highlight Black beauty. However, she straightens her naturally curly hair for it to conform to white beauty standards.

Princess' brother

Princess' brother is a talented professional photographer who frequently takes photos for anyone who asks. However, when his sister, whom he loves dearly, asks for her photos to be taken, he ironically does not agree to take them.
