Princess
Princess is the story's protagonist, an optimistic girl who looks forward to becoming a beauty queen in England. Princess is the daughter of Mavis and Wendell. The author describes Princess as a dreamy girl who wants to go against the odds to achieve the impossible things in her life.
Princess and her family live in a racially divided society in England. Princess' family struggles with discrimination, but she is focused on her studies and ambitions. Princess is mistreated in school because of her dark skin.
Mavis
Mavis is the mother of Princess and Wendell Junior. Mavis is also the ex-wife of Wendell Senior. Mavis is a loving and caring mother who encourages her children to work hard in their studies to become successful. Despite the rampant discrimination, Mavis continues to work hard to secure a good life for her children. Mavis and Wendell are divorced, and their relationship is strained. At last, Wendell apologizes, and they reunite and live as a family.
Wendell Junior
Wendell Junior is the son of Mavis and Wendell Senior. Wendell Junior is intelligent and focused on becoming a photographer and social justice champion after finishing university. Wendell Junior is protective and caring because he is always concerned about the well-being of his younger sister, Princess.
Wendell Senior
Wendell Senior is the father of Princess and Wendell Junior. Wendell Senior is also the ex-husband of Mavis. Wendell Senior is a loving father to his children. Wendell Senior struggles with racism in England because he fails to secure a job in the Bristol Omnibus Company. Wendell Senior joins other minority groups in demonstrations against the company to demand social justice and equal employment opportunities. Wendell Senior accepts his mistakes and apologizes to his ex-wife, Mavis. After the apology, Wendell Senior and his wife reconcile and start living together as a family.
