Pickup on South Street Themes

Identity

Identity is a major theme of this film. Candy is told to deliver microfilm for her former boyfriend, Joey. She believes she can trust him, but he's in league with The Reds. And, Skip is pursued by Candy in order to get the microfilm back from him. She is trying her best to ensure he doesn't get hurt but he doesn't believe who she says she is, he thinks she is a Red even though she is a woman who's in love with him.

Cold War

The Cold War is a major theme of this film. We watch as Skip holds on to microfilm that could turn the fate of the war in favor of the Russians. This is the beginning of the era of the Cold War where secrets are most valuable, and choosing a side even more so. Skip knows that he is an American and it's the major reason he turns the film over. He isn't a traitor to his country.

Trust

In this film, no one knows whom they can trust. Everyone has betrayed everyone else in one way or another to such a degree that there is no proof that you can trust someone at their word. That is until Moe is killed. She won't give up Skip for any amount of money and dies for it. Her loyalty causes Skip to begin to trust Candy and turns the tide for the film's delivery to be stopped.
