In this section, the reader gets a glimpse of Pedro Páramo’s rise to power. How does he go about getting control of the Media Luna? What are the repercussions of these actions that we have already seen in the book?

Pedro's first step as the owner of the Media Luna is to erase his family's debt and expand his land. He does this by marrying Dolores Preciado and killing Toribio Aldrete, a rival landowner. Both steps show what Pedro Paramo is willing to do to maintain control. He marries a woman simply to erase his family's debt to hers.
