The narrator
The narrator of the poem is a father who lost his child, his pearl, and who is mourning his loss. He falls into a dream which guides him to comfort, repentance and reveals secrets of God and Christianity.
Pearl (Perle) child
The father mourns the loss of his child and in the dream is confused whether he is visited by it. It is clear that his pearl and his grief are what inspires the dream journey.
The Pearl of Heaven
The Pearl of Heaven appears to the father in his dream. She welcomes the distraught parent and reveals that the Lamb has taken her as his Queen. She guides him and answers his questions about religion and God.
