Trusting Reuben

Objective:
To begin to consider Reuben’s character and his possible shortcomings as a truthful storyteller, as well as to learn about the concept of unreliable narrators
Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.3, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.9-10.5
Structure:
Play the video “Unreliable Narrators” from the PBS Great American Read’s “It’s Lit” series (https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=735209786813402). Ask students to split into pairs or groups of three to discuss whether or not they think Reuben is a reliable narrator. Do they think the miracles he describes are real? Do they believe what he describes as occurring at church?
