Why were Clare and Gertrude fearful while pregnant? Were their reasons different?
Clare and Gertrude were both fearful while pregnant that their children would be dark-skinned. However, the two women’s reasons are slightly different. Clare knows that a dark-skinned child would most likely reveal Clare’s hidden racial makeup. Gertrude, in contrast, seems to prefer lighter skin for aesthetic reasons, believing it to be better to have a lighter skinned child. Irene is offended by both women’s remarks.
