The plot of Parramatta Girls takes place in the Parramatta Girls home in New South Wales Australia. The home has been known for several names. The story centers around eight girls that have a history in the home, as there is a reunion. During the reunion, the audience is taken back in time though flashbacks as the girls explore and remember everything they have been through.
In the beginning of the play, the eight girls arrive outside of the home for the reunion, greeting each other with various degrees of pleasure and displeasure. The girls then go inside the gates, and their histories are revealed. The girls reenact their first homes and how they were taken and initially brought to the home, telling the audience how the home was supposed to be a place for difficult girls.
Then they express their experience in the home themselves, each story fast paced, but viewed in detail. They show how they hurt each other, were punished by guards and employees, as well as themselves, as some were self-harming. Even a ghost appears, which are the remains of a girl that committed suicide after the maltreatment in the home. They show in detail how they were mistreated and abused, their cries for help never heard.
Two of the girls then try escaping, as they think it’s the only way they can get free. They are told that one of the scariest and most menacing guards are following them, which leads them to change their plan. Instead of running away, they climb up the roof and refuse to get down. A riot breaks out, where all the girls are involved, and comes out of the home. As the women clean up after the riot, they ask the audience to remember what has happened, for those who has voices and for those that doesn’t.
