"Once I saw Charlie push his wife so hard she went down and hit her head and had to have four stitches."
The author uses Charlie's personal background to justify why he is treating the alien, John, this way. Suggesting that Charlie is violent with his wife allows the reader to understand why Charlie was treating John unfairly, because he is a bad person himself.
"I seldom have the chance to show our friendliness to an ordinary Earth person. I make so little difference!"
This quote by John reveals that none of the humans see his friendliness because they don't want to approach him. Instead, they just listen to what the media and other people have to say about the aliens, so if they hear that they are unkind, they will believe it. John never gets the chance to prove himself to the humans because they never give him a chance and get to really know who these aliens are and what they want. They just assume that they are corrupt and want to take over their planet.
"The government says I gotta serve sp*ks and n*ggers, but it don't say I gotta serve him!"
Charlie reveals his malicious personality when claiming that he serves "sp*ks and n*ggers" because the government forces him too, not because he believes everyone should be treated fairly. Charlie calls the alien "him" instead of "it" so even he cannot deny that the alien is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. Throughout all of these hateful comments, the alien remains silent and takes all of these blows without fighting back.
"Why does he have to come here, with his birdcalls and his politeness? Why can't they all go someplace else besides here?"
Sally was the only person who treated John with respect in the beginning of the story. At the end of the story, she wants all the aliens to leave and puts the blame on them. This shows that no matter how kind the aliens are, people will always follow what the media perceives them as. The humans will always follow the popular opinion and never give the aliens a chance.
