Images of Colonization
In the play, there are several images of colonization. The settlers arrive at the Botany Bay and make it a crowded and a disturbed place. The convicts and the officers ruin the way of life there during the process of colonization. They leave their own land and settle in a new land. Aborigine represents the ‘colonized’ people while the soldiers represent the ‘colonizers’. At the end of the play, Aborigine is covered by pus and infection which demonstrates the deteriorating condition of a colonized land.
Images of Theatrical play
The governor asks about reforms through theatre. Ralph asks Harry to put his name as the director of the play, ‘The Recruiting Officer’. After the announcement of the play, there are images of audition for the theatre and then there are images of rehearsals, of performing the play by the convicts and them walking on the stage in the sounds of applause.
Images of Hanging
The play is replete with the images of hanging the inmates. Philip, Collins and Tench talk about hanging the prisoners. Collins says that the convicts should be hanged, and Tech agrees with him. Then there are images of hanging ‘Handy baker’ and there is a constant talk about hanging Liz.
Images of Prisoners
The play revolves around prisoners and it begins with the images of prisoners being taken away from the prisons for another imprisonment. They face the worst conditions during the journey and half of them died during the process of transportation. There are images of Arscott and Caesar in chains.
