Orphan Train Irony

Orphan Train Irony

The boss

Molly’s life with Ralph and Dina could be better, if Dina could bury the hatchet from time to time. She was seemingly displeased with Molly’s presence and couldn’t even make an attempt to get on track with Molly. More often than not, Ralph had to interfere in their quarrels. All decisions – even the least important ones- were supposed to be made only by Dina. Ralph used to say, “We can’t make a decision on that till the boss gets home”. The irony of this was the fact that Dina wasn’t the boss but rather a drama queen.

Sentimental and kind

Molly likes thinking that she is a toughie. Her passive-aggressive attitude helps her to create an impression of a person who doesn’t care about anything at all. When Vivian presents her with a book, she feels “a lump in her throat” and this surprises her even more, because she is not sentimental at all. She decides that “she must be getting on her period”. The irony of it is that Molly is really kind-hearted and emotional but she doesn’t like to admit it and comes up with this lie to excuse her feelings.

Clever

When Molly decides to leave the house of Ralph and Dina, he says that he gets why she doesn’t want to stay with them. Molly gives him a surprised look and thinks, “no shit, Sherlock”. The irony is that Ralph – although pretty harmless – is not very bright, for it takes him a lot of time to realize that unfriendly atmosphere can be unpleasant to live in.
