Orphan Train Imagery

Not an easy prey

Molly is not the kind of girl who could be easily moved to tears and she definitely knows how to protect herself from teasing and bulling. When Jack starts paying attention to her, Molly does everything possible to scare him off, for she believes that he one of those guys who get “a kick of messing with weird girl”. She always stood “with her arms crossed, shoulders hunched, dark stiff hair in her eyes”. Every time he asked her question she “shrugged and grunted”. She was an embodiment of an idea of unfriendliness. This imagery describes a troublesome teenager.

A teenage girl’s dream boyfriend

Being a son of an immigrant, who left him and his mother, Jack “should be on social fringes too”. But it is not like that. Jack proves to be every teenage girl’s dream. He has “flashing moves on a soccer field, a dazzling smile, great big cow eyes, and ridiculous lashes”. Although he doesn’t want to admit it, he is “smarter than he knows”. This combination of good looks, smartness and impressive physical abilities make Jack an eligible boyfriend. This imagery is also used to show how different Molly and Jack are.

Blessed land

Niamh remembered how “people all around us were fleeing to America”. They heard “tales of oranges the size of baking potatoes”. People imagined “fields of grain waving under sunny skies”. People dreamed about “clean, dry timber houses with indoor plumbing and electricity”. Not to mention that jobs were “as plentiful as the fruit on the trees”. This imagery depicts a land of happiness where there is a place for everyone and opportunities are plentiful.
