One Day in Auschwitz Irony

One Day in Auschwitz Irony

Food

A camp responsible -- and most famous for -- death and destruction now is replete with gift shops and a food court. These are totally opposite to what Auschwitz's aim was to do during WWII -- it brought unhappiness and death. Gift shops and food courts bring happiness and allow human life to continue.

"Work Will Set You Free"

The now infamous sign at the front of Auschwitz, which reads "Work Will Set You Free," is not great shape -- and never was. The "B" in the German version of that saying ("Arbett Mach Fret") is turned upside down, indicating a lack of desire to work.

Concentration "Camp"

Auschwitz was certainly not a "camp." It had no tents, cotton candy, and fun activities as its name would suggest. Instead, it was a place of tremendous suffering and death and destruction -- it was certainly in no way fun or interesting.

Luggage

Luggage was thrown off to the side and picked through for valuables, but the Nazis told the Jews that they would be home in no time. Instead, the Jewish people endured one of the worst genocides in history. More died than went home -- and many of those who died still believed that they would get their luggage back.

The Ovens of Auschwitz

The ovens of Auschwitz came with a 75 year old warranty when they were bought by the German government, suggesting that it was thought that the Third Reich would last more than 75 years. In fact, the Reich lasted only twelve years; Auschwitz was only open for five years.
