    Why does Carol say she doesn't believe her feelings are relevant to their discussion?

    Carol believes that she has transcended feelings. In some ways, Carol is much more honest than John, as she at least understands what she wants and why: power, so she can achieve some semblance of professional, economic, or social security. Though her feelings of insecurity obviously buttress this desire for power, there is something devoid of feelings in her calculated pursuit of power. What she means here is that any feelings of sympathy she may have for John are not relevant to the discussion, ultimately, because if she were to let those feelings convince her to retract her...
