The Door
The door to Jessie’s bedroom represents the end of Jessie’s life. She has already explained she is going to go into that room, lock the door, and kill herself. On the other side of that door is death.
Needlework
There is needlework all over Mama and Jessie’s house. It's on pillows, afghans, quilts, doilies, and rugs. It symbolizes the comfort of their country home.
Sweets
Sweets are also a comfort to Jessie and Mama. There are candy dishes, candy jars, and chocolate boxes everywhere along with an assortment of cupcakes, hershey bars, and peanut brittle.
