Nice Work

Nice Work Analysis

Nice Work includes several schisms. For one, there is the schism of gender, and the role of a feminist voice in a men's economy. Then, there is the schism between academy and business, and question of whether one is leading the other, or whether academics and economics are merely participants in a dance of some sort. There is also the schism between conservative and progressive ideologies, especially around the issue of morality and ethics.

In order to make sense of those questions, look at Vic and Robyn's "romantic relationship." Vic finds Robyn exhilarating and mind-opening. Never before had he seriously questioned his ethical obedience to his marriage vows, but Robyn's less-structured approach to life leads him to wonder about his own worldview. Plus, he wants to sleep with her.

Where Robyn comes from though, these kinds of affairs are normal, and non-obligatory. She learns about Vic's more conservative point of view when he starts to follow her around like a lost puppy. In the end, the story shows that the divisions we draw between ourselves may actually be substantial, but they don't change our essential qualities as humans and as agents of our own fate.
