Tsitsi Dangarembga was born in 1959 in Mutoko, Zimbabwe, which was then known as Rhodesia. She completed her elementary education in England. When she was six years old, she returned to Zimbabwe and attended a missionary school. In 1977, she studied medicine in England again at Cambridge University. In 1980, she returned to Zimbabwe to study psychology. Soon after, Zimbabwe gained independence from the United Kingdom. As a student, Dangarembga loved theater and wrote several plays.
