Family life
In this novel, Gerald Durrell provides a humorous account of family life, describing the chaos, drama, and foibles his family experienced while living in Corfu. Animals and nature
The natural world is a key aspect of this novel, which isn't surprising as Gerald Durrell later became a famous zookeeper and conservationist. In this novel, Gerald describes how he was a lover of animals from a very young age, and how he kept some interesting animals as pets while living in Corfu.
Adapting to a new home
Gerald describes how the Durrell family adapt to their new life in Corfu. Things are incredibly different from England, including the weather, culture, and customs. At first, the transition is therefore very difficult. However, the family soon become used to life in Corfu and come to love the locals, freedom, and sense of community.
Community
While living in Corfu, the Durrells met many interesting people, who are described by Gerald in this book. There is a real sense of community in Corfu, which includes the family's friendship with taxi-driver Spiro and Dr. Theodore Stephanides. Gerald meets many eccentric and interesting characters along the way, including locals, his tutors, and Larry's artistic friends.
