"My childhood in Corfu shaped my life. If I had the craft of Merlin, I would give every child the gift of my childhood."
Here, Gerald reflects on his childhood, stating that it was perfect. His childhood was entirely unconventional, living in sunny Corfu and spending more time outdoors with animals than in the classroom. Gerald credits his childhood in allowing him to pursue his passions, which later led to the creation of a successful zoo.
"Gradually the magic of the island settled over us as gently and clingingly as pollen."
Although the family at first have difficulty adjusting to life in Corfu, they soon adapt and begin to love the island. Gerald describes Corfu has to have a certain "magic," which made the whole family fall in love with the island.
"It's all your fault, Mother", said Larry austerely; "You shouldn't have brought us up to be so selfish."
"I like that!! exclaimed Mother. "I never did anything of the sort!"
Here Gerald describes a typical family argument in the Durrell household. He shows how the children did not appreciate the kindness of their Mother, and the effort she put in to provide them with a comfortable life.
