Darrow O’Lykos

Darrow is the primary narrator and protagonist of the narrative. He embarks on his journey as a devoted husband and father whose primary concern is that of his family. As the story develops, Darrow discovers the bitter truth behind the suffering of the Reds in the mines which extends his ambitions past the welfare and safety of his family. The brave Darrow begins campaigning for his village which gains him an upper class. Now he is worried that he is losing himself and forgetting his roots.

Sevro au Barca

Sevro is one of the leading characters in the book. His loyalty to Darrow is unhinged. He is both cunning and indifferent to certain people. Like his friend and leader, Sevro starts off as a low red and moves up the ranks as the story progresses. Some of the villagers consider him distinctly cruel seeing how he treats his enemies. Overall, he is a good and sensitive character who values loyalty above all else.

Virginia au Augustus

Born of two twins, Virginia was considered the strongest amongst her siblings. However, she could not inherit her father’s throne as Nero wanted a male heir. Her more elderly brother, Claudius, who was next in line for the throne, admired his sister. The two enjoyed each other’s company and played for hours during their childhood. As the only daughter of the King, Virginia took a special place in her father’s heart. The king would take her horse riding almost every day and make angels in the flower fields.

Cassius au Bellona

Cassius is the eldest and favorite son of the leader Tiberius. He is arrogant and careless but cherishes his family and close friends. After encountering Darrow, the two become instant friends to the point of calling each other brother. Together they lead their armies into war and Cassius ends up becoming an Olympic Knight after displaying his prowess in a duel between him and Razor.
