Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Operation R.A.F.E Notebook

Operation R.A.F.E notebook symbolizes Rafael's disobedience. The notebook contains the sequence of the school rules that Rafael plans to disobey. The rules that have already been broken are marked, implying the rest are in queue. When Miller steals the notebook, Rafael pays him to get it back.

Underwear

Rafael's underwear symbolizes his courage. During the school's Halloween, Rafael runs across the school, only wearing his underwear. Rafael is fearless in going against the norms. Except Rafael, no student in the school can walk, only wearing his underwear. Therefore, the underwire represents Rafael's boldness to disobey the school rules.

The Dragon

The dragon symbolizes Ms. Donatello's strictness. Ms. Dragon is the most feared teacher at Hills Village Middle School. Rafael turns into a problem whenever she comes across Ms. Donatello. For instance, Ms. Donatello detains Rafael, and when she discovers he is not ready to change, she hands him over to the police.
