Marley and Me Characters

Marley and Me Character List

Marley

Marley is the main character of the story. He’s not just a dog that sits quietly and fits into the scenery. He is a part of the family. His behavior is not perfect, it’s not even good: he eats everything he see, his saliva and hair is everywhere, he rushes both at friends and strangers, but everybody, who deals with him is deeply imbued with attachment to this madcap creature.

John Grogan

John Grogan – the narrator, and his story had really taken place in his life. He’s a praiseworthy man – loving husband and father, a good friend for other people and especially for his dog. He is brave and strong, there was only one time in his life when he cried – when his dog died. John works at the newspaper: first, as the correspondent in Sun-Sentinel, then as the main editor.

Jenny Grogan

Jenny Grogan – as well as her husband, she is a good wife, mother and friend. She never gives up, even when she has a miscarriage. She makes her family’s home cozy and certainly happy. As well as her husband, she works in the newspaper, but as a journalist.

Patrick

Patrick – the eldest child in the family. As well as other children, he appears in the story at that moment when he is born. His character wasn’t childish; he seriously and carefully accepted Marley’s death, and showed fully adult fidelity to the dog.

Connor

Connor – the middle child in the family. As his parents called him, he was “a future writer”, since even as a little boy he revealed the gift of writing. When burying Marley, he wrote a serious and deep speech for a boy about his love for the dog.

Colleen

Colleen – the only daughter of John and Jenny. She is quite young in the story, so she hasn’t attained any special features. She is a cute, nice little girl, who loves her family and dog and got deeply attached to them.
