Yasmin Ghorami
Yasmin is the story's protagonist, and the author depicts a perfectly dutiful young woman who strictly observes her faith. Yasmin is studying medicine to become a doctor like her father. When she is 26, Yasmin is ready to get married to Joe. However, the two families belong to different religions and cultures. Yasmin takes her parents to meet Joe's mother in a posh home, and they are shocked to learn that she is a modern feminist. The differences in religion and culture do not prevent Yasmin from marrying Joe.
Joe Sangster
Joe Sangster is the son of Harriet and husband to Yasmin. Joe is a doctor like Yasmin and looks forward to marrying her to cover up his sexual scandals that he does not want anybody to know. When he finally marries Yasmin, the truth starts coming out slowly, and it reaches a time when she decides to walk out of the marriage.
Harriet Sangster
Harriet Sangster is Joe's mother and Yasmin's mother-in-law. Harriet is a famous scholar and feminist who live luxuriously. Harriet is a familiar figure in Magazines, especially during the 1990s when she posed naked for a magazine image. Harriet is not ashamed of what she does because she considers herself a modern woman whose roles and men do not define decisions.
Arif
Arif is Yasmin's brother, a jobless graduate trying to make ends meet. Arif knows a lot about Joe's family because he has read several sexually explicit essays by Harriet. Arif came across a naked image of Harriet in a 1990's magazine, wondering if she would be his sister's mother-in-law. Arif has his own flaws. For instance, he fathers a baby with his girlfriend outside wedlock, which contradicts his faith.
Ghorami/Baba
Ghorami is Yasmin's father, who is strict and religious. Ghorami makes sure that Yasmin pursues medicine to become a doctor like him. Ghorami wants everything in his family to be done according to his instructions, which explains why Yasmin struggles with her personality. Ghorami was an orphan, but he worked hard in his life to become a stable man. Therefore, he is strict with his son to ensure that he makes it in life.
Rania
Rania is Yasmin's close friend, and she is a perfect example of rebellion in the modern generation because she goes against her traditions and faith to pursue her goals. Rania decides to start drinking alcohol, and her drunkenness sparks an endless conversation is social media. Rania embraces feminism and is ready to go against her religion to achieve whatever she wants.
Flame
Flame is a performance artist, and her primary role in the novel's plot is to fuel the journey of Anisah and Rania. They are looking forward to becoming socialites like Kim Kardashian.
