Les Belles Soeurs

Les Belles Soeurs Imagery

Birds Singing (Auditory Imagery)

In the midst of complaining about their families as a chorus, Lisette says the following line: “When the sun with his rays starts caressing the little flowers in the fields and the little birdies open wide their little beaks to send forth their little cries to heaven.” This lush description of the sounds of a morning shows that Lisette is both slightly more optimistic than the other guests and also believes she is more cultured than they are, which is why she speaks in a more "elevated" diction.

Colonial bedroom (Visual Imagery)

While talking to Rose on the phone, Germaine describes a list of things she plans to buy, including the following: "I'm getting a Colonial bedroom suite with full accessories." This brief visual image gives a strong sense of the kind of home Germaine is envisioning using the stamps to construct.

Back-Breaking Work (Haptic Imagery)

While depicting their daily struggles in unison, the women say the following: "I walk all day, I break my back carrying parcels this big, I come back home exhausted." This haptic imagery gives a sense of the deep physical exhaustion they feel from chores like carrying grocery bags.

Flatulence (Olfactory Imagery)

In a very crude comparison, Rose says that Lisette believes her "farts smell like perfume." This olfactory imagery suggests that Lisette is unaware of how she is perceived and carries herself with a great deal of self-importance.
