Tommy disagrees with Connie--he says men and women do like each other now, more than ever. The problem, though, is that if they like each other they cannot love each other. Tommy says that a woman wants both--to be liked and talked to by a man, and loved and desired, but it is impossible for these states to coexist. He explains that conversing with someone as an equal is a kind of intimacy that is incompatible with desiring that person.
