The book is an autobiography by a biology scientist separated into three different parts along with a prologue and epilogue. The author uses the prologue as a commentary on climate change and destruction of nature and epilogue as guidance on what each individual can do to help the cause of nature rescue and directs towards planting as many trees as possible.
In-between these there is the author's life story combined with the commentary on her research. We get a glimpse into her childhood and what drove her to become a scientist, her struggle as a female scientist and adjusting to the role of wife and mother as well. Her best friend Bill plays a tremendous part in the story as her science partner and her emotional support.
Her commentary on the research she's done ties in with her life journey, connecting nature with humanity. The book discusses themes of science, sexism, friendship, and love as well as gender roles. It ends with a hopeful tone for the future and promotes connection with nature and helping it stay healthy and flourishing with united human effort.
