Kiss Kiss

Kiss Kiss Analysis

"Kiss Kiss" is a collection of short stories written for the adult public by the author famous for his works for children. This collection consists of eleven stories that explore themes of male and female relationships, deceitful appearances and body horror. Almost all of them have some aspect of horror that leaves the reader disturbed and uncomfortable.

"The Landlady" is a story about a young man stumbling upon a bed and breakfast where he is greeted by a pleasant old lady unaware of the secrets she's hiding. "William and Mary" is a story with the element of body grotesque and explores the possibilities of medicine. William doesn't have long to live and decides to agree with his eccentric doctor friend to preserve his brain and an eye so that he continues to live in that form. The story gets an even disturbing turn when the wife of William decides that she likes him better in this form and insists on taking him home.

"The Way Up to Heaven" is a story about a woman who has nervous breakdowns fearing that she might miss a plane or train and about her husband who enjoys enhancing her suffering by intentionally coming out of the house late and slow when she's in a hurry. This doesn't end well for the husband, because the wife realizes what he's doing and decides to ignore his calls when he gets stuck in an elevator of the house and leaves him there to die.

"Parson's pleasure" is a story about an antique furniture dealer who devises a plan to cheat the village folk out of their priceless old furniture by pretending to be a parson. He stumbles upon Claud and Rummins (characters who appear in other stories as well) who believe his story that the priceless piece of furniture in Rummins's house is worthless and that he only wants the legs, They kindly decide to chop the famous piece of furniture in pieces for the ease of transportation, before the excited parson returns with his car.

"Mrs Bixby and the Colonel's Coat" is a story about a woman making a plan to hide the expensive mink coat she got from her lover from her husband. She leaves it at the pawnshop and takes a ticket which she will later show her husband and day that she found it on accident, and what ever is left under the ticket can be picked up by them. The husband does precisely that, and the wife is excited that the coat will finally be in her possession. What she gets from her husband, who went to collect the item, is a cheap fur. Walking out the office she sees her husband's assistant wearing her precious mink coat.

"Royal Jelly" is a story about a man obsessed with bees, who discovers the benefits of the royal jelly and decides to consume it and give it to his newborn daughter as well. The wife is terrified seeing that both her husband and her daughter are starting to look like bees.

"Georgy Porgy" is a story about a man who carries deep childhood trauma into his adulthood and can't bear the touch of a woman. The trauma has to do with his mother showing him rabbit birth which is followed by the mother rabbit eating her baby right before she dies in a tragic accident. George gets tricked by a local group of women and as one of them is about to kiss him, he sees himself being swallowed into her body. The story ends implying that Georgy is at a mental hospital believing that he is inside the woman's belly.

"Genesis and Catastrophe" is a story that tells about the difficult birth of Hitler. "Edward the Conqueror" is a story about a woman discovering that a cat that followed her home is rebirth of a famous composer. Her jealous and coward husband kills the cat.

"Pig" is probably objectively the most disturbing and most horror-like story of all. It follows a young boy whose aunt teaches him to live as a vegetarian. After she dies he follows her will to go to the city and collect her inheritance. The man in charge of giving it to him, seeing his naivety, gives him only a small fragment of it, saying that the rest is needed for taxes and funeral costs. He then goes to a restaurant where they serve him pork. Never having tasted meat, he is delighted and asks the chef about the source. The chef is clearly involved with the trade of meat, which also involves meat from human source. He directs him to the butcher factory where young Lexington suffers the pig's fate.

"The Champion of the World" is a story bringing back already mentioned character of Claud. Claud gets himself into an adventure of poaching which doesn't end as well as he initially planned.
