Kindertransport Summary

Kindertransport Summary

In 1939, Eva Schlesinger is sent to the UK to escape the violence against Jews in Nazi Germany. Too young to understand why she had to leave home, she concludes that she was abandoned. Eva arrives in England and joins her foster family. In time, her Jewish roots become eroded as she is forced to adapt to the British way of life.

Eva has changed her name to Evelyn and completely denied her Jewish heritage. She eventually reunites with her birth mother, Helga, but their differences are irreconcilable. Evelyn despises her mother for abandoning her. Helga rebukes Evelyn for denying her Jewish heritage. They part ways, never to see each other again.

Decades later, Evelyn is now a mother. She despises her foster mother for aiding in the erosion of her Jewish heritage. Evelyn's daughter, Faith, discovers her mother's past and feels betrayed. She confronts Evelyn and a bitter argument ensues. Their relationship is never the same again, which mirrors the broken relationship of Evelyn and Helga.
