Evelyn
Evelyn is the play's protagonist. When the play begins, Evelyn is a young girl living with her mother, Helga, in Nazi-occupied Germany. When the Nazi persecution starts, Helga sends Evelyn to live with her adoptive parents in England. However, at her young age, Evelyn is inquisitive, and she struggles to understand why her mother abandons her and, making matters worse, hands her over to strangers in England.
After arriving in London, Evelyn lives with her adoptive family, and she quickly assimilates to English culture. With time, Evelyn starts denying her Jewish roots because she now considers herself an English person. Evelyn forgets her biological mother and starts seeing her foster mother as her birth mother. Later in life, Evelyn reconnects with her biological mother when she visits England. Helga requests Evelyn to accompany her to New York to start a new life, but she refuses because she no longer considers herself a Jew.
Faith
Faith is Evelyn's daughter. All along, Faith believes that Lil is her biological grandmother. One day, Faith discovers that her mother is a Jew and she has roots in Germany. Faith feels that her mother betrayed her by not telling her the truth. Evelyn explains to Faith why she kept her past a secret because she wanted to protect her from her painful past.
Ratcatcher
Ratcatcher is an imaginary character in the children’s book that Eva reads with her mother. Ratcatcher is a bad character in the book because he takes the villagers’ children to the cliff to punish their parents. According to Ratcatcher, parents of these children take their blessings for granted. When Eva goes to England, she remembers the children’s story and concludes that her mother is punishing her.
Helga
Helga is Evelyn's biological mother. When the play begins, Helga and her daughter Eva live in German. When the Nazi persecution begins, Helga and her husband send Eva to England. Helga is a loving mother because she puts her daughter's safety first. Helga remains in Germany for several years before she goes to England to reunite with her daughter, now called Evelyn. When Helga requests Evelyn to relocate with her to the United States of America, Evelyn refuses because she wants to remain in London.
Lil
Lil is the English foster mother who adopts Evelyn at a young age. Lil is a lovely and caring mother who takes Evelyn as her biological daughter. Lil takes Evelyn to an English school, where she quickly assimilates and becomes fluent in English. In addition, Lil ensures that Evelyn adopts the English culture. Lil and Evelyn create a strong bond and vow to care for each other for the rest of their lives.
Eva
Eva and Evelyn are the same person. Eva is the younger self of Evelyn. At the age of twelve, Eva was living with her mother in German. When the war began, Eva's mother sent her to England to live with a foster parent for her safety. When Eva arrives in England, her name is changed to an English name, Evelyn.
