Kanthapura, as a work of historical fiction, includes at times sexist concepts, language, and violence, including domestic violence and rape, against women. It is a good idea to contextualize these potentially triggering topics culturally and historically so that students go into the reading prepared. Talk about what sexism is, how it has played a role historically across the globe, and how it continues to the present day.
