Jorge Luis Borges was born in August 23, 1899, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Although he spent much of his childhood in Buenos Aires, Borges's first language was English, and he spent much of his younger years reading classical literature in that language. Just before the advent of World War I, Borges's family moved him to Geneva. Borges earned his college degree while living in the city and learned to speak both French and German. In 1919, his family moved again, this time to spend two years on Spanish soil before returning to Buenos Aires in 1921. Much of the geographical breadth of Borges's stories comes from the fact that he himself traveled so extensively during his lifetime.
