The title Italian Journey besides being audacious it represents Goethe’s life revolution. Goethe visits Italy in the 17th century when the city of Rome is characterized by the old architectural edifices. The historical edifices are a manifestation of Goethe's channel of life. The chronological structures present are becoming older every day. The aging chronological edifices bring to the attention of Goethe that he is not immortal because he will grow older and eventually die.

It comes a time in life when one resolves to go on vacation far away from home for reactivation before resuming to work. Goethe is fond of visiting new places to beat boredom. Since this journey is sacred to him, he does not want anybody to recognize him. Thus, he makes up his mind to use a new name and call himself Philip Moller to ensure that he enjoys his travel unnoticed.
