Thanhhà Lại (pronounced "Than-ha") is a Vietnamese writer who lives in upstate New York.
After fleeing Vietnam toward the end of the war in 1975, Lại and her family settled in Alabama. Lại worked as a journalist in California before undertaking a Master of Fine Arts degree at New York University. Her first novel, Inside Out & Back Again, was partly based on her childhood experience as a refugee in the US and won both the National Book Award and a Newberry Honor.
Her other novels include Listen, Slowly, and Butterfly Yellow.
