The romance stories serve as a point of contrast between what Geeti expects in a relationship and reality, largely as experienced by Sangeeta. Based on the stories she reads, Geeti believes that all marriages are happy and healthy, that everyone in them is satisfied. But Sangeeta's marriage doesn't follow that path. More importantly, the books Geeti reads are European, even further removed from her lived experience.
