I Love Dick Summary

I Love Dick Summary

I Love Dick begins with Chris telling about herself and her marriage to Sylvère. They meet a man named Dick, who is very friendly. Around that time, Chris’ and Sylvère’s marriage started having major problems. Chris begins looking for comfort elsewhere, and when the friendly Dick comes around, she begins fantasizing about him.

Soon, both she and her husband begin writing letters to Dick, without sending the letters. They write to the point where they realize they nearly have written a book, which is when they really try getting back in contact with him. Dick answers but is very elusive. Chris decides to try finding Dick, while her obsession with him grows. Her fantasies are sexual, as she wished to have sex with him. When they finally meet, she offers Dick sex, yet he says no. He isn’t the person she has created in her mind.

Chris doesn’t stop writing her letters to Dick. She explains her life to him, and how she has been abused and mistreated, connecting the way he treated her to how she had been treated before. Her history is revealed, as she begins writing about her forefathers, feminism, and her own sexuality.

When she meets Dick again, she asks him to read all her letters, which he does. Instead of professing his love for her back, he continues keeping her at an arms distance, even more so than before. Sylvère sends a letter to Dick, explaining Chris’ behavior. Dick answers by sending Chris and Sylvère the same letter.
