Vulnerability of the Witch
“the Witch locked herself away in the house never to leave again, not by day or night, perhaps for fear the Condes were waiting to take their revenge”
Here, the reader sees a different perspective towards the Witch – a more sympathetic and understanding view. The Witch is always described in a negative way, but here you see how much society has broken her down. She too is very human and vulnerable to harsh words, so it is no surprise that she is in fact, scared about the potential revenge against her for supposedly “killing” her husband and step-sons.
The Devil
The Witch is described as being the epitome of evil, even titled the “devil” by the rest of the community. Her physical description also seems to fit the profile: “she grew thin and pale and just looking her in the eyes sent a chill through you because it was clear she’d gone mad.” It seems that the verbal abuse and gossip at the hands of the people helped perpetuate the Witch’s transformation from the “Young Witch” to the “Devil.”
